Mexicoing and Fasting
It has been about a month in Mexico. My wallet thanks me for making the journey south and I’m stoked to be improving on my Español. The people are very welcoming and nice in my experience. What have I learned down here? I don’t know. Life is different, but the same. Just like in LA, I have an app like Classpass. My day usually consists of a workout or two. The process of getting there differs. Sometimes I take the metro, which can be hot sticky and stuffed with people like sardines. I just got access to Ecobici which are bike stations all throughout the city I have access to. I’m riding those things around all the time. There’s Uber here as well. I haven’t had a ride cost me more than 5 dollars and I’ve had multiple 30 minute plus rides, so that’s nice. There’s also jump bikes and everyday it seems like more scooters are littered around. I found one Bird Scooter and it has disappeared since.
Just like LA, there are areas that are rough and just like LA there are areas that are super boujie. There’s one road that resembles Rodeo Dr. with a Tesla shop, Gucci, Tiffany’s, Louis Vuitton, Armani etc. There’s countless trendy coffee shops, yoga studios, and cute places to eat. I haven’t really tried any of these fancy places to eat. Street food is more my style. Again, the food is bomb and I think the chefs take a lot of pride in their work. It is extremely easy to litter pesos to every street vendor just to get a taste of what they have. I mean… gotta try it all, right? Everything is hand made. Fuego. I’ve also seen quite a bit of film/commercial/photoshoots going down throughout the city, just like LA.
I think I’ll head to some Oaxacan beaches this weekend. I can’t wait to get my wave fix and neither can my hair. My hair seems to hate this place and its water. It’s very dry and if you forget your chapstick you’ll be in big trouble.
60 Hour Fast
Fasting is not fun. It really isn’t. It’s a constant mental war as time seems to crawl. I was dying as I watched my friend eat this beef soup as he was constantly being handed fresh, warm, hand made tortillas. I craved everything. Sugary, salty, spicy it all sounded sexy.
I’m super stoked to have completed my mission of a straight water fast for 60 hours. I’ve done multiple day-long fasts, so the first 24 hours was cake. I’m curious to try longer, but may add a supplement or two so I don’t feel like blacking out when I stand up. Now that I know 60 hours is possible without too much death, I’ll have to push my limits.
The energy felt okay. I felt super light and I love that feeling. My legs felt strong climbing up the pyramids yesterday, but my cardio/head did not like it one bit. I think this is due to lack of electrolytes and your body getting used to using a different energy source. More research is needed.
One thing that really stood out was my moment of zen on the pyramid. I felt like I could’ve sat there for hours and I kind of regret that I did not. Fasting has been used for spiritual reasons and I definitely got a sense of that for a few minutes there. It was such a moment of peace and clarity despite the people around me. Next time I do a prolonged fast, I’m going to head out in nature and find a place to just sit and hopefully I’ll get that same feeling.
